Considerations When Hiking with your K9

Hiking is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. It is also a great way to bond with your dog. Hiking with your dog can be a rewarding experience for both the human and the animal. However, it is important to remember that hiking with dogs is not for everyone.

Dogs need to be in good shape and have the stamina to hike for long distances. Hiking with dogs can also be dangerous if you are not prepared. Many people don't know that it's not safe to bring your dog on a hike if you are not prepared.

Things we should consider before bringing our dog on a hike:

  • Is your dog in good shape?

  • How much does your dog weigh?

  • What type of terrain will you be hiking on?

  • What type of weather will you be hiking in?

  • How many hours/days will you be hiking?

  • What elevation will you and your dog get to?

Some tips for hiking with dogs:

  • Always have plenty of water for both you and your dog.

  • Bring plenty of food and treats for both you and your dog.

  • Bring a leash in case there are any problems while hiking, like getting lost, or encountering aggressive wildlife.

  • Consider footwear/paw protection for your dog depending on the length of the hike, your dog’s overall hiking experience, and type of terrain.

Now, get outside and bring your K9s for a hike in the great outdoors!
